A winning answer to a common application question
“What have your extracurricular activities instilled you with ?"
At first glance, many of our students are kind of baffled at how they should go about answering this question.
The selection committee is testing your:
Ability to self-reflect
Values & morals
Clarity of expression
Many candidates make the mistake of responding with short and very generic answers.
Don’t be one of them.
Here’s an answer we helped one of our students craft this year for successful admission to ESSEC’s MIM.
“All of the extracurricular activities I have participated in in the past and continue to do so today have primarily instilled in me a great deal of curiosity. In my opinion, this is an essential human and professional quality that allows me to quickly establish intimate human relationships and genuinely contribute intellectual ideas. I am constantly ready to discover new environments, new cultures, put myself in others' shoes and learn from them, in pursuit of personal growth.
Whether it's music or sports, I've learned to love self-improvement and progression through repetition and effort - in my eyes, it's essential to instill discipline in oneself to progress in any field, whether it's mastering an instrument, a new sport, or, in a professional context, new skills. The competitions I participated in for windsurfing and Kempo (3rd in France in 2011) were very formative life experiences in this sense, shaping my competitive spirit and work ethic.
Finally, my involvement in associations has taught me a great deal about human understanding, unified collaboration, and altruism. Being able to help people with disabilities and those in precarious situations in my own way has been a very rewarding experience that now motivates me to create and drive similar initiatives, and has allowed me to reconsider my perception of the impact I can have on others' lives.”
To reach top-tier programs your will need stellar application question answers. Let us help you impress the selection committee.
