Applying to 2 programs from the same school : good idea ?

Find out

When considering whether to apply to multiple programs at the same school, it's crucial to understand how admission committees evaluate applications.

The most effective essays typically address several key questions:

  • Why are you the right candidate?

  • Why is this the right time for you to pursue this program?

  • Why have you chosen this particular school over others?

  • What is your vision, and how can this school help you achieve it?

If you attempt to tailor your narrative to fit two different programs at the same school, there's a risk that your sincerity may come into question. Admission committees are adept at discerning whether a candidate is genuinely passionate about their path, or if they're merely a skilled storyteller crafting what they think the committee wants to hear.

Writing a convincing, heartfelt essay for one program already requires deep introspection and clarity about your career goals and educational needs. Trying to convincingly do so for two distinct programs can dilute the authenticity of your application, leading admission officers to doubt the depth of your commitment to either program.

For these reasons, we usually advise against applying to multiple programs at the same institution. Focusing your efforts on one program where you can make a compelling case about your fit and dedication is likely to enhance your chances of admission more than a scattered approach.

Now your turn, which programs should you focus on ?
